Back to School

Happy back to school month to all of you learners out there! Even though I'm not going back this time around, this is still such a fun time of year.

This season was a reminder for me to make goals. So I picked out a pretty little notebook for myself and wrote down a few things (one of which was to read a new book this month).

I also decided to make a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils... because what says fall better than that? Oh, You've Got Mail. It's one of my all-time favorite movies.

I think I may even have to put together a back to school outfit, just for old times' sake. :)

Oh, and don't tell anyone, but I'm planning a birthday party for my mother-in-law, and I think the theme is going to be "back to school"! I'm really excited for some of the things I'm planning. And how perfect is this: she's a librarian! It's going to be fun.

Happy Monday!

On Getting a Job

As I write, this is what I see outside:

I wanted to document this because... I live in Las Vegas! Ha ha. Raining for more than 15 minutes is a rarity indeed. And it's stinkin GORGEOUS! I love rain.

-------------------------

Anyway, as you may have heard, I got a job! I wasn't exactly thrilled to get working again, but after a couple of weeks into my job, I love it.

I work at Hobby Lobby and let me tell you, it's the best job I've ever had. You know, when you compare it to my past jobs of janitorial work and bakery cleaning. Yeah, working at a craft store > past jobs.

Life can be hard, money tight, and things just unpredictable. And at this time in my life, I'm so thankful to have a job.

I guess what I really want to say is that we often have to do things that we don't want to. This is a lesson I'm learning lately. But in the end, doing those difficult things is often what we needed.

Late Night Crafting

There's only one reason why this new job at Hobby Lobby might be bad for me:

A lot of my paycheck is going right back to them! In my defense, the ribbon was 50% off this week. And I used my employee discount. At less than a dollar a headband, can you blame me?

Much to my husband and bank account's dismay, I've really started getting back into crafting again. I had forgotten how nice it feels it create something. And if you plan it right with coupons and sales, making headbands and clothes can be so much cheaper than buying them in stores.

Headband tutorial HERE.
Next week's project: the 10-minute maxi skirt found HERE.

Amy's "Bridals"

Hello blog world!! It's been a while. Getting a job will do that to you, I suppose. I have so so many things to tell you about (like my awesome job!!!), but for today, we'll start with my gorgeous friend, Amy's, "bridals".

I say "bridals" because she isn't engaged. :) But here's the best part: she was in a wedding earlier that day and just so happened to catch the bouquet! Could this have worked out any more perfectly?

I've needed some camera practice, so I was overjoyed that Amy agreed to model for me. And since she's kinda my BFF, the whole shoot was a blast. I also got to practice some of my editing skills that I'm learning from THIS awesome e-course.

Anyway... here they are! I hope you like them.

Monday

Heyyy! Life update!

We just finished moving into a rental home that Scott's dad owns. It's so nice to be getting a great deal on rent (thank you, in-laws!) and also have a lot more room than our former house. Seriously, it has 3 bedrooms and a lovely, spacious kitchen. Needless to say, we're loving it!

The only downside would be the smoke smell left by the previous tenants. Ick. We've invested in several air fresheners to help mask that nastiness.

In the midst of moving and packing craziness, we had to indulge in a little 5 guys.

And, I just broke 300 followers! Thanks, guys! I'm surprised so many people would be even remotely interested in my life. You guys are awesome.

This week's goal: get some healthy habits back into my life, since I've eaten too much crap during this move. It's time to work out, drink water, and eat more fruits and veggies!

Anything you're trying to accomplish this week?

P.S. check out these two little funnies:
Here and here.

UPDATE: Wow, this post is becoming pretty frazzled. But anyway, I found out today that I'm interviewing for a job tomorrow! I'm so nervously excited, and hopeful that things will work out! I'm going to be outfit planning all night. :)

Misery is Optional

This weekend we drove up to Utah to visit my family. I love to see them as often as possible, and my mom's birthday also happened to fall on one of the days we could visit. As always, it was so nice to be home. I have so many fond memories from that house.

While we were up there, we went to lunch as a family to celebrate my dear mother's birthday. My dad asked if she had any wisdom or advice for us youngsters, and she said something like this:

"Suck it up. Work really hard and push through the difficult times."

At this point in my life, this really struck a chord with me. More often than I'm proud of, I haven't been a person to suck it up to do hard things. But when my mom said that, I could really see how important of a principle that was.

My mom is one of the hardest working people I know. Bad things have come her way out of no fault of her own. And yet, through all of that time, she has constantly been going to work, doing household chores, and being a fantastic mother. And all of this she does with a smile on her face.

Also, while I was reading the new Slash Blog by Nichelle and Elise (which by the way, is awesome and you need to check out!), I saw that Elise wrote that one of her favorite quotes is the one above: "Trials are mandatory, but misery is optional."

Amen, sista! Many of us will have those I-hate-my-life moments. But going through the hard times  is a little bit easier with a smile on your face.
